Download and listen to Microcast #51: More on tracking of reading
Trying to create the basics of a reading tracker to replace goodreads on my own site. Haven’t worked with php & databases in a long time. ?

@MrHenko Gaiman is my absolute favourite author. I first got into Sandman many years ago but then discovered his books and, I agree, he’s someone who lodged himself in your mind. I’d recommend Anansi Boys or American Gods next.
@colinwalker Thanks for the recommendations! I think a paperback of American Gods is already in my bookshelf, but I’ll have to check once I get home. And yeah, there really is something special about Gaiman and I think part of it, at least to me, is that he seems to be such a likeable, intelligent and nerdy guy.
Johan Norberg om Ayn Rands roman Atlas Shrugged – Godmorgon, världen!
Quick note to self, since I will definitely wonder about this again. If I want to view my list of WordPress links as an OPML (i.e. wp-links-opml.php) and filter for a specific category, the way to do that is to add the ?link_cat=[category id] suffix to the URL.
A first draft on an Eno-esque ambient thing.
A JavaScript application randomizes note order from a list of allowed notes and pipes them to the Web MIDI Api They then enter Ableton Live which routes the MIDI to an E-Mu Proteus/2 that does the actual sound generating. The sound from the Proteus is then treated with delay, reverb and Valhalla Shimmer in Live.
This is very much inspired by the article JavaScript Systems Music and by Eno’s Airports 2/1.
@MrHenko That’s really interesting. I’ve never written any generative music but once wrote a piece composed of 5 sections of different lengths that all looped and overlapped giving a varied output. It was 19 minutes but I worked out it could have gone for hours without repeating.
@colinwalker Thanks! :) But I don’t know if I should really say I wrote something in this case. More like I setup some ground rules and tweaked sound. Anyway, it was great fun to do. Did you read the article that I based my experiment on? What you did sounds a lot like Brian Eno’s technique. Do you have your piece available online for listening?
@MrHenko I’ve not read the article yet. Eno has done both, loops and generative. I hear you on whether you’re “the composer”. I wrote a post about that after Eno released Reflection. I’ll have to get mine online
@MrHenko Here’s mine – Part 2 is the one I mentioned but there’s also Part 1 as a bonus. It’s crazy to think they’re 17 years old now!
@colinwalker Thoughtfull post! I liked it.
@colinwalker Thanks! Really interesting sounding.
@MrHenko Thanks. I’m glad you liked it.

17 oktober, 2017 06:49@MrHenko I just noticed that the webmention for this came through as anonymous. ? I’ll edit the name field on the comment but thought you might like to know your blog isn’t telling the indieweb who you are.

17 oktober, 2017 08:42@colinwalker That’s strange. I use a WordPress site and the Webmentions plugin, so I don’t really know what might have gone wrong. Thanks for letting me know!

17 oktober, 2017 08:48@MrHenko I see you have vcard in the footer, maybe add the h-card class to the same element.

17 oktober, 2017 08:50@colinwalker Yeah, that might be it. I’ll look into it. The theme definitely needs some cleaning up. Maybe I should remove the link to app.net as well. :)
