A couple of great tips & tricks for Lion

posted this on and tagged it with Links

A personal favourite:

Lion’s new Resume feature automatically opens any application’s documents that were active when the app was quit. That can be jarring to people who traditionally quit an app when finished with a document. To ensure that a completed document does not automatically open the next time you launch the application, hold Option and choose [the Application Name] > Quit and Discard Windows, or press Command-Option-Q. Alternatively turn this feature off completely in the General system preference pane; you can then ensure that an open document does automatically open the next time you launch the application, again by holding Option as you quit the application.

This is so sad in every possible way. Patent trolls are really the lowest of humans. (Longer post about software patents likely to come soon.)

More Final Cut Pro X

Serenity Caldwell’s written a thoughtful article in MacWorld about Final Cut Pro X, titled How Apple re-cut Final Cut Pro for the better. One of many very interesting points:

Final Cut Pro X isn’t about alienating professionals: It’s about finding out just what a “professional” looks like in this day and age.

MySpace has been sold

posted this on and tagged it with Links Music Social Media

Apparently MySpace has been sold by Rubert Murdoch to a company named Specific Media. (My original source, Dagens Nyheter) One of the owners of Specific Media is reported to be Justin Timberlake.

The really interesting part in this, to me, is that I found out about it in a swedish daily newspaper. Dagens Nyheter is not known to be good at techie stuff. The news is even filed under economy, not technology. I have not heard anything about this in any of the international tech blogs I read or as part of any tweet.

To me this means that the tech world is no longer interested in MySpace. It’s considered yesterdays news and I couldn’t agree more. Goodbye MySpace.

Own a shape

This is great article from Interuserface on the usage of very simple geometric shapes (focused on mobile computer devices) as part of the branding.

Archive by topic, not date

Joost de Valk wrote a good article the other day called ”Archive SEO: archive by topic, not by date”. (My skepticism for the term SEO will be discussed some other time, however Yoast is good at what he does.) I followed his advice from the article, so now this blog uses tags to order old posts by topic and content, not date.

HTML5 Audio Player

This is a great run down of how to use the audio element from HTML5 alongside jQuery to create an in-browser audio player. Perfect as an introduction to <audio>.

Perch – A really little CMS

Recently I’ve been more and more interested in exploring a new CMS besides WordPress. Last week I checked out Perch which really seemed right for a future project.
