Yesterday I wrote a post (in Swedish) about how recent development i Sweden regarding privacy, government control and our control of the government worries me. Since it’s written about Swedish politics, from a Swedes perspective, I didn’t feel like it was appropriate to write in english. This post, however, feels much more internationally appropriate.

The problem of government surveillance is real, very real. However, since I’m not an anarchist, I do think we should have a strong (but preferably small) government and law enforcement agencies but it is very important to make sure they don’t circumvent our privacy more than necessary to uphold the liberal democracy (which is what I think we are seeing tendencies toward in Sweden at the moment).

That is not the problem I’m going to address in this post. Here I’m going to whine and worry about the surveillance of us done by corporations. It’s truly frightening how much the big computing corporations know about us. To me, especially the corporations that purposefully mines us for our personal information to sell us ads (hello Google, Facebook, Twitter etc.) scares me.¹

I am not anti corporations² and I’m not a Free Software advocate. I find great value in Open Source code but I don’t think closed source is inherently evil or that corporations can’t be trusted. Therefore I’m not interested in substituting everything in my computer life for open source alternatives (as suggested by this site) at least not as long as I think there are other values in software that are currently closed source that I don’t find in the open source world.

Hence I will not replace my MacBook Pro or its operating system, my iPhone and iPad or their operating systems, my LG TV, my TomTom GPS or my Kindle. But I will try to make conscious choices to rely less on products where I’m not the customer but merely the product.³

First up Google Search.

A couple of hours ago I started using DuckDuckGo instead of Google for my main web search. To make this fairly easy, I did two things.

1. I changed ”Fall back search” in Alfred from Google to DuckDuckGo. Something like 40% (I think) of my web searches is done from the Alfred prompt.
2. I installed the DuckDuckGo Safari extension. This overrides Safari’s default behavior of searching with Google when I type search strings in the address bar and instead searches DuckDuckGo.

These two small changes means I don’t have to change anything about my day to day behavior when searching the web and still feed a whole lot less information into Google.⁴ There is one small problem, though.

I like searches tailored specifically for me! I’ve tried switching away from Google before but ended up switching back because I couldn’t find things as easily when using DuckDuckGo. Since Google knows so much about my browsing habits, it’s also very good at finding the things I need. So that is the catch 22 here. This time, I’ll try to power through for at least two weeks. If I still miss tailored searches, I guess I have to re-evaluate my decision.

Som titeln säger, jag skräms av utvecklingen. För att vara mera specifik så skräms jag över utvecklingen av hur staten (och andra stater än svenska staten också för den delen) tar sig friheten att övervaka och avlyssna mig mer och mer. På många områden blir vår värld bättre och bättre men när det gäller frihet från statens inblandning så går vi snarare en allt mörkare framtid till mötes.

I förra veckan dök två saker upp på min radar som sammantagna visar på en mycket tragisk utveckling och det allra sorgligaste är att debatten kring båda verkar ha uteblivit. Höger- och vänsterdebattörer i Sverige har så fullt upp att kasta SD-apan på varandra och SD-debattörer har fullt upp med att skrika ”Eurabia” så ingen av oss verkar längre orka bry sig när staten kringskär våra friheter mer och mer. Så vad hände?

Det ska alltså bli lättare för staten att övervaka oss medborgare samtidigt som vår möjlighet att kontrollera vad staten pysslar med ska minska. ”Who watches the watchmen” blir i allra högsta grad en mer och mer intressant fråga.

När den så kallade FRA-lagen drevs igenom lovades det dyrt och heligt att signalspaningssystemet inte skulle användas för att spana internt i Sverige, oavsett hur gott syftet (brottsbekämpning) kunde anses vara. Denna regel har det tummats mer och mer på allt eftersom tiden gått.

Detta har oroat mig länge men jag har, som så många andra, inte direkt engagerat mig i det men någonstans nu, när staten alltså vill minska vår möjlighet att kontrollera vad den håller på med, så börjar jag bli riktigt rädd. Särskilt rädd blir jag över att motståndet bland riksdagens partier är så litet.

Sedan 2006 har vi i Sverige haft en högerregering som påstår sig ha en delvis liberal inriktning. Ett av regeringspartierna har t.o.m. ordet ”liberalerna” i sitt namn medan ett annat försöker profilera sig som liberala. Visst har det blivit en hel del liberala reformer sedan dess, men bara i vad jag skulle kalla ytliga frågor. Det är förvisso inte oviktigt att staten idag konfiskerar en aningen mindre del av de pengar vi tjänar och i högre grad låter oss själva bestämma vad vi vill spendera dem på men så länge staten kränker vår integritet så blir alla jobbskatteavdrag, momssänkningar, fria skolval etc. helt värdelösa ur en liberal synvinkel. Eller skulle ni säga att samhället i 1984 vore ett gott liberalt samhälle, om ”Big Brother” tog ut en låg skatt?

Samtliga partier i högerregeringen tycker alltså att en inskränkning av offentlighetsprincipen är en bra grej. Det tycker även det största oppositionspartiet. Det gör det så svårt för mig som liberal att veta hur jag ska agera nästa år, när det är riksdagsval. Spelar min röst ens någon roll, om merparten av partierna tänker rösta igenom sådana här lagar? Vänsterpartiet är inte ett alternativ för mig, inte under några omständigheter. Samma sak gäller givetvis även för Sverigedemokraterna. Då återstår bara Miljöpartiet, som så vitt jag förstår ser Stefan Löfven som sitt statsministeralternativ och vips så är vi tillbaka med ett av partierna som vill inskränka offentlighetsprincipen som högsta hönset.

Alternativet som då finns är Piratpartiet, ett parti som jag i mitt ungdomliga oförstånd tyckte var bra inför valet 2006, eftersom jag tyckte att det var bra att få saker gratis, men som jag senare velat distansera mig från mer och mer. Jag har svårt att förlika mig med deras, och många prominenta liberala debattörers, syn på upphovsrätten men frågan är om inte frågan om integriteten måste väga tyngre.

Jag är alltså mycket, mycket kluven inför nästa års olika val.

Något att fundera på

Förslaget om att inskränka offentlighetsprincipen gick alltså igenom. Offentlighetsprincipen är en del av Tryckfrihetsförordningen, en av våra svenska grundlagar.

För att en svensk grundlag skall ändras krävs att två likalydande beslut (vilande och slutligt) fattas av Riksdagen. Mellan de två besluten måste det dessutom ha hållits ett allmänt val. ¹

Det borde alltså betyda att den svenska riksdagen begick ett brott mot Sveriges Grundlag?

Yesterday I tried out Siri for a while. (Remember, my old phone was an iPhone 4 so this is the first time I have access to Siri.)

I tried to get her to play me some music by Warren Zevon. Let’s just say it didn’t exactly work as planned.

Yesterday my new iPhone 5S arrived at my doorstep.¹ That means that I’ve now owned and used an iPhone 5S little over a full day. I thought it might be fun to write down some first impressions of it. This is not meant to be a comprehensive review. Nor is it meant to answer the question whether you, dear reader, should buy an iPhone 5S. I’ll happily leave those kinds of decisions to you.

Background information for context

iPhones have been my primary phones since the fall of 2008 when I bought an iPhone 3G.² I used that phone happily for two years until I made the catastrophic mistake of ”upgrading” its OS to iOS 4. That mistake resulted in a super slooooooooooooow phone and pushed me to buying an iPhone 4 instead.³ That iPhone 4 has then been my one and only phone up until yesterday.

Because of the terrible ending of the 3G I’ve been hesitant to upgrade the OS too much on the 4. I waited almost a year to go from iOS 5 to iOS 6 and I decided not to upgrade to iOS 7 at all. Still, the phone has gotten slower and slower, probably because of a mixture of wear and tear on the components and apps that are increasingly resource hungry. Since it’s been a gradual slowdown of the phone I don’t think I realized just how slow it had become, until now.

It’s fast

The iPhone 5S ⁴ is fast. Really fast. This seems to be a mixture of much faster hardware and the ability for apps in iOS 7 to do data fetching in the background.

I am a bathroom twitter reader. I mean, aren’t we all? Up until yesterday a bathroom twitter session was as following:

• Launch Twitterrific⁵ and wait for 15-30 second while it showed its splash screen and tried to launch.
• Silently curse when Twitterrific crashed (due to low memory?).
• Re-launch Twitterrific. Wait for another 10-20 seconds.
• Curse again.
• Re-launch once again.
• Smile happily as the timeline finally displayed.
• Wait for another 10-30 seconds while the timeline refreshed.

Now, the procedure has been shortened:

• Launch Twitterrific.
• Immediately be presented with a newly refreshed timeline.
• Start reading tweets.

Same goes for other apps, for example Instagram.⁶

Even things that I didn’t think was unnaturally slow on the iPhone 4 (things like launching new podcast episodes in Downcast) has been sped up significantly on the 5S.

Touch ID

The value proposition of Touch ID seems fantastic and when it works it really is great. However in my use so far it fails more often then succeeds. (Something like a rate of 60% failure, 40% success.) I’ll likely come back to this in a future blog post.

iOS 7

I think iOS 7 looks great. (Apart from Apples icons, that is.) Since it is not a new OS on the same old phone I don’t feel that almost vertigo-like feeling and frustration that some seems to feel when upgrading their old phones. The whole package, phone plus OS, just feels fresh and interesting.

As mentioned above the ability for apps to fetch data in the background also makes the whole phone feel faster.

That’s just some quick thoughts. I’ll probably write more once I get more familiar with the phone.
